GEO vs SEO vs AI ads
SEO wins you a link, AI ads buy you a labeled slot, and GEO earns you the recommendation itself — the part customers actually trust.
| Approach | What it gets you |
|---|---|
| SEO | A ranked link in the list of results — you still have to win the click. |
| AI ads | A paid, labeled “Sponsored” slot beside the AI answer. Google now places ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode.1 |
| GEO | Your place inside the recommendation the AI actually gives. |
Two catches with ads. First, a sponsored slot sits next to the answer, not inside it — OpenAI says outright that ads “do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you.”2 The recommendation customers trust is still earned. Second, ads can’t reach the moments that matter most in personal or health-related decisions: OpenAI blocks ad placement in what it calls “sensitive user contexts,” including personal-health and emotionally vulnerable conversations.3
Paid and earned aren’t enemies — and paid is getting easier to buy, with OpenAI now offering self-serve, pay-per-click ads with no minimum spend.4 But an ad stops the day you stop paying. You can rent the slot beside the answer; you can’t buy your way into the answer.
