What is GEO — AI search visibility?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of getting your business named and cited when people ask AI assistants — Google’s AI, Gemini, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and Perplexity — who to use. It’s the AI-era counterpart to SEO: where SEO competes for a link in a list, GEO competes to be in the answer itself.
The shift is already large: Google’s AI Mode alone passed a billion monthly users this year.1 When the assistant gives one answer instead of ten blue links, being named is the whole game — if you’re not in it, the customer never sees you.
So GEO isn’t about gaming a ranking. It’s about being the business the AI is confident enough to recommend: clearly described, consistently listed, and backed by sources the AI already trusts.
Named, cited, recommended — three different things
The single most useful distinction in this work is that appearing in an AI answer has three levels, and only one of them sends you customers.
| Level | What it means |
|---|---|
| Named | The AI mentions your business somewhere in the answer. |
| Cited | Your page is listed as one of the sources the answer drew on. |
| Recommended | The AI actually tells the customer to use you. |
These come apart more often than you’d expect. A June 2026 controlled study found a brand’s own page cited as a source while the AI recommended its competitors about 69% of the time.2 Being the source and being the answer are not the same job, which is why we report all three separately in the audit.
What GEO actually consists of
In practice it comes down to three things, and they have to be done together — any one alone tends not to move the answer.
- Answer content. Clear, accurate pages that answer the questions customers actually ask — cost, comparisons, “do I need this” — written so an assistant can lift the answer cleanly and attribute it to you.
- Citations and listings. Being present, accurate and consistent on the third-party directories the AI actually reads in your field. If your name, services and location disagree across the web, the assistant can’t be confident who you are — and it won’t recommend what it can’t pin down.
- Reviews and real mentions. The genuine third-party agreement that assistants lean on when they decide who is worth recommending.
What GEO is not
It isn’t advertising. You can buy a labeled slot beside an AI answer, but not a place inside it — the two are separate surfaces, which we lay out in GEO vs SEO vs AI ads.
It isn’t keyword stuffing either. Assistants read for meaning, not density, and a page written to hit phrases rather than answer questions gives them nothing quotable.
And it isn’t fake reviews or bought listings. Those breach platform rules, and they work against you with the assistants too — inconsistency across sources is one of the things that makes an AI less certain about a business, not more.
GEO is the work of becoming the business an assistant can describe accurately and recommend confidently — because the sources it already trusts agree about you.
That’s slower than buying clicks, and it’s also why it holds: earned visibility doesn’t switch off the day you stop paying. If you want to see where you currently stand, why isn’t my business showing up walks through the three usual gaps, and the 2-minute scorecard gives you a rough read without talking to anyone.
